Aquamarine Rings are Popular and Make for a Well Loved Gemstone

Aquamarine rings are a favorite because of its blue to blue-green color. The word comes from the Latin phrase meaning “water of the sea” and is truly the color of the tropic waters in the Caribbean. Aquamarine stones are from the mineral beryl. It is a very common stone in its lighter color but can be much more expensive in its darker shade of blue-green. This gemstone can fade when subjected to periods of sunlight. Although aquamarine is a hard stone, (7.5-8 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale,) a ring may develop cracks from a hard wack of the wrist.

Sometimes this stone is heat treated and it will permanently change its color from blue-green to blue. The light blue colored aquamarine stone can be mistaken for a blue topaz because the color can be very much the same. Blue topaz is much less expensive than aquamarine. Unlike other gemstones aquamarines tend to be flawless. It is rare to find an aquamarine stone with flaws. These gemstones are faceted into many shapes and can be found in many shades of blue to blue-green designed into estate aquamarine rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings. I have seen vintage aquamarine rings that are stunningly beautiful. Aquamarine is the birthstone of March. It is also the anniversary stone for the 16th and 19th year of marriage.
